When we first set out to build our own window boxes we browsed around the internet for tutorials. While it is just a simple box built to the dimensions of our window, we wanted to make sure we didn't miss anything important. We found this website helpful for the basics. The most important thing we learned is to NOT use nails. If you do you will be rebuilding your window boxes in the near future because they will fall apart. You must use screws to make your box hold together.
We were able to purchase cedar lumber to build the boxes, which is both lightweight and durable to moisture from watering plants. After P. built the boxes I primed them with an oil-based exterior primer/sealer and then painted them white to match our trim and shutters.
I had already planted my flowers for the window boxes in white plastic liners so once they were installed on the house all I had to do is pop them in. This will make it super easy to clean up the flowers at the end of the season, and for planting new flowers next spring. Two 24" liners fit perfectly inside each box. Using liners will also extend the life of the wooden boxes because I am not planting directly into them.
The Reveal....(!!!)
I planted white geraniums, two shades of purple angelonia, pink, white, and blue trailing lobelia, coral and pink calibrachoa, chartreuse creeping jenny and potato vines, trailing vinca vines, and bacopa. I think that the boxes look stunning, and they will more so as the plants fill out and cascade over the edge throughout the summer.
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! My snapdragons began blooming in the last few days. They are one of my favourite flowers to cut for fresh bouquets in the house. I had bought three cell packs of the Liberty Mix and had no idea which colours would appear in my garden. This magnificent orange one has me intoxicated with its colour...I am in love with it!
Amanda...your window box is just very beautiful...
