Garden Fresh :: Jam Making

Yesterday I transformed the hand-picked pail of strawberries P. brought home for me into jars and jars of freezer jam. I make this recipe each year, with both strawberries and raspberries, and it always turns out tastefully delicious. We enjoy our homemade jam all year long.

I use the Club House Garden Fare brand of freezer jam gelling pectin. My mom switched to this brand years ago and I find it produces better tasting jam than other leading pectin brands because it uses about half of the sugar. This is not only healthier, but we find that we can taste the natural sweetness of the fruit in the jam more than the sugar (which we like!). I follow the recipe directions on the package. All you need is fruit, sugar, and the pectin. Jam making is really a lot more simple than people make it out to be--if you do the freezer version...you don't have to mess around with cooking and canning!

The fun part is mashing the strawberries to how you like your jam...

Mmmm...fresh strawberry jam ready to eat. Yum!
