Project Nursery: DIY Cloud Pillow and Other Sewing Projects

I love all of the adorable little cloud pillows that I've seen on Pinterest and Etsy, but didn't really want to pay for one when I had a ton of creamy white fleece and a sewing machine sitting in my closet!  I whipped up this little pillow in no time and think it's the perfect little accessory to dress up the crib...of course it will need to be taken out whenever baby is sleeping for safety reasons.

Here's what you need to make your own cloud pillow:
  • Fabric of your choice - I used fleece
  • Matching thread
  • Paper to make your cloud pattern
  • Sewing machine and/or a needle to hand stitch
  • Polyester stuffing

STEP 1:  Sketch out your desired cloud shape onto paper and cut it out.  You can make it as large or small as you would like.  Pin your pattern onto your fabric.  To save time I folded my fabric and pinned the pattern onto a double layer so that I would only need to cut once.

STEP 2:  Take your two pieces of cut fabric and pin them right sides together.

Now, this is where I stopped taking step by step photos as I got carried away with the sewing!

STEP 3:  Sew your two pieces together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.  Sew all the way around, but be sure to leave a hole large enough to turn it right side out.

STEP 4:  Cut away any loose threads.  Before you turn the cloud right side out snip into the corners (of the cloud 'bubbles') so that the seams will lie flat.  Turn right side out.  Depending on your fabric, you may need to press your pillow at this point to get rid of any wrinkles.  Fleece is very forgiving, so I did not press mine.

STEP 5:  Fill with the polyester stuffing to your desired fullness.

STEP 6:  Either with your machine or with a needle and thread sew the opening closed.  You're done!

While I had my sewing machine out I also made some baby burp cloths and wash cloths, following my Make it Monday feature this week.   I really love how they turned out!

The quilting shop in my town is having a HUGE sale on fat quarters tomorrow, so I will be heading there to pick up more fabric to make a few more of these.  You can't have too many!
