DIY Idea: Lavender Sachet

My lavender harvest from my garden was dry enough now to remove it from the stems and use it. Yay! Since I only had a small harvest I decided to sew up a little sachet to keep the scent of lavender in my life a little longer.

I used these as my inspiration for making my own sachets...I love how rustic and European they look. They go together with the lavender smell that reminds me of the French countryside...sort of like armchair travel through the nose!

I made my sachet a little bigger than these, about 3 1/2 inch square. I cut out two 4 inch squares (1/4 inch seam allowance) from some muslin fabric I had at home and scouted my local thrift shop for some antique lace. (I got this lace for 15 cents a meter!) I cut the lace to be 4 inches also, then centred and pinned it to the right side of one square. With right sides together I sewed around the edges, leaving a small gap at one side. Turning the sachet right side out, fill it with the lavender mix, and hand sew the opening together. So simple! It turned out beautifully--I love this lace detail that makes it look so old. There are so many creative variations you could do with a simple sachet to repurpose and reuse little bits you have around your sewing basket.

I followed Centsational Girl's tip for lavender filling; 2 parts lavender to 1 part rice or flax seed. Since I didn't have a lot of lavender the added rice gives the sachet a little more substance.

The scent should last a number of months, up to a year, and just needs a little agitation to release more lovely lavender smell when needed. Can't wait for a bigger harvest next year!
